GS1 Sunrise 2027: What the 2D Barcode Switch Means for Your Labels

For twenty years the barcode on a retail pack has been a row of black bars. From the end of 2027 it gains a partner: a 2D code that a supermarket scanner and a shopper's phone can both read. GS1 calls the transition Sunrise 2027. For anyone who prints labels, the practical question is narrower than the industry headlines: how big does the 2D code have to be, how much white space around it, which error-correction level, and what happens to the linear barcode you already print. This article answers those, and says plainly what Sunrise 2027 does and does not require.

What Sunrise 2027 actually says

GS1's Sunrise 2027 ambition is that retail point-of-sale systems globally are able to scan 2D barcodes — principally a QR code carrying a GS1 Digital Link URI — in addition to the linear symbols they read today. It is an industry readiness target, agreed through GS1 member organisations and retailers, not a regulation with penalties.

Three consequences follow, and they are the ones that matter on a label:

  1. Nothing becomes illegal on 1 January 2028. Your EAN-13 keeps working. What changes is that a growing share of lanes will also accept a 2D code, which lets one symbol carry the GTIN plus batch, expiry, or a link to product information.
  2. Packaging gets re-laid-out. Adding a second symbol to a pack that was designed around one is a real design problem, especially on small labels. Start the conversation with your designer before the artwork is otherwise final.
  3. The 2D code has to meet GS1 dimensions, which are stricter than the "any QR code will do" assumption most people bring from marketing QR codes.

Module size (X-dimension)

A QR code is a grid of squares; one square is a module, and its side length is the X-dimension. Everything about scannability follows from it. For GS1 QR codes intended for retail point of sale, GS1's design guidance sets the range at:

Symbol size then depends on how much data you encode. A GTIN-only Digital Link URI is short; adding batch, expiry and serial pushes the code to a higher QR version with more modules per side, and at a fixed X-dimension that means a physically larger symbol. Decide the data content first, then the size — not the other way round.

Quiet zone: four modules, all four sides

QR codes need a clear margin of 4 modules around the symbol. At an X-dimension of 0.495 mm that is just under 2 mm of empty space on every side. It is empty, so it looks like wasted room, and it is the first thing a designer reclaims when the layout gets tight — which is exactly why it is the most common cause of a printed 2D code that will not read.

Error correction: what you are actually trading

QR codes carry Reed–Solomon error correction at four levels. Higher levels let the code survive more damage — but the redundancy occupies modules, so at the same physical size a higher level means smaller modules, which is the opposite of what you want in print.

If you are placing a logo in the middle, use H, keep the covered area under roughly 8% of the symbol, centre it exactly, and never let it touch the three finder patterns in the corners. Then test with a real imaging scanner — a phone is far more forgiving than the equipment at a goods-in gate.

Print and material considerations

A realistic transition plan

  1. Now — audit your packs. Which SKUs have room for a second symbol, and which are already tight? The tight ones need design work, not a last-minute paste-in.
  2. Decide what the 2D code carries. GTIN only is the simplest and keeps the symbol small. Batch and expiry make it genuinely useful for traceability but enlarge it.
  3. Ask your retailers. Their lane readiness, not the calendar, determines when you can rely on 2D. Until they confirm, the linear code is what completes the sale.
  4. Print both. Dual marking is the norm through the transition, and it is what GS1 expects during Sunrise.
  5. Verify before the run. Grade printed samples with a verifier rather than scanning one label on your desk, and scan with the reader type the code will actually meet.
